There is one file for each of the seven survey years, 1990-96. The files are intended to be used in conjunction with the NHIS core and supplement files and have been constructed to enable users to link them with the NHIS files for the corresponding year. The files have ben released on CD-ROM Series 10, No. 9A. FILES AND DOCUMENTATION The seven files listed below comprise the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Imputed Annual Family Income 1990-96 files. The files are in a self-expanding compressed format that will uncompress to ASCII format as described below. The documentation files are in pdf format and can be viewed with Acrobat Reader software. To load and expand the dataset, do the following: first, copy the compressed file onto your hard drive into an appropriate subdirectory. Using PKUNZIP, unzip all the files in your directory. The file FAMINC90.DAT can then be used for processing by PC statistical software packages which utilize ASCII formatted input, or uploaded to a mainframe computer for processing. There is a file layout (also called data dictionary) for each dataset in the Layouts file. The Methods file contains information about the annual family income variables that were imputed and a description of the methods used to impute the annual family income variables. The Methods file includes tables that show the distribution of the reported and imputed values of the two annual family income variables. This file also contains a description of editing carried out on the dichotomous annual income variable prior to imputation to make the income values consistent for family members.
