Nonindexed Terms, Standard Abbreviations, and State
Geographic Codes Used in Mortality Data Classification


The basic purpose of this manual is to provide a published
source of code assignments for terms not indexed in Volume
2 of ICD-9.  This list is believed to be essentially
complete but is not all inclusive in that terms which are
rarely encountered and do not affect the underlying cause
of death assignment are omitted.  Terms not indexed in
either Volume 2 of ICD-9 or in this manual should not be
coded.  Rather, they should be referred to Chief, Data
Preparation Branch, at NCHS for review.  After reviewing
all such terms received during the year, a decision will be
made on those terms to be included in the next edition of
this manual.

The Instruction Manual is comprised of eleven Wordperfect 
files that have been compressed into the file 2EMANUAL.ZIP
