However, the Internet file layout frequencies and Current Estimates tables have not been corrected -- see ERRATA.TXT and the CE*.ASC files described below. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WARNING - DATA USE RESTRICTIONS! Read Carefully before Using The Public Health Service Act (Section 308 (d)) provides that the data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), may be used only for the purpose of health statistical reporting and analysis. Any effort to determine the identity of any reported case is prohibited by this law. NCHS does all it can to assure that the identity of data subjects cannot be disclosed. All direct identifiers, as well as any characteristics that might lead to identification, are omitted from the data set. Any intentional identification or disclosure of a person or establishment violates the assurances of confidentiality given to the providers of the information. Therefore, users will: 1. Use the data in this data set for statistical reporting and analysis only. 2. Make no use of the identity of any person or establishment discovered inadvertently and advise the Director, NCHS, of any such discovery. 3. Not link this data set with individually identifiable data from other NCHS or non-NCHS data sets. By using these data, you signify your agreement to comply with the above-stated statutorily based requirements. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * INTRODUCTION In 1995, NCHS corrected a problem in some National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) injury condition records that were generated during the coding process. This problem began with the 1982 NHIS and continued through the 1994 data files. The effect was, in most years, to overestimate the number of reported episodes of injury and associated injury episode days. The scope of the resultant overestimates was generally small, but would be larger for types of episodes that frequently caused multiple injuries, such as those involving motor vehicles. The problem affects only some conditions reported to be a result of injury and only affects whether or not the condition was a "first" injury (locations 128 and 138). These fields are used to generate the number of injury episodes that have occurred. It does not affect any other estimates, including the number of injuries. The problem occurred when records were generated during the coding process because an insufficient number of condition records were entered in the initial interview to accommodate all of the conditions. The majority of the changes will occur in injury records resulting from a car crash with consequent multiple injuries. Changes in estimates of injury episodes will, therefore, affect primarily those involving moving motor vehicles. The updated files are identical to previous files with the exception of locations 128 (All injuries) and 138 (Selected first injury) which will have changed on some records in the files because of the correction. Therefore estimates made from these files should be identical to previous estimates except for estimates of episodes of persons injured and associated days; these will either decrease or remain the same, depending on the year of data collection. The entire file layouts for each year are not included on the assumption that users of the condition files already have them. Included, however, is an errata sheet with any changed frequencies in locations 128 and 138 for each year. Please see revised Current Estimates tables 51-56 for each year from 1982-1994 which are included. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CONTACT INFORMATION Updates about new data releases, publications, or errors will be sent to members of the NHIS Listserv. Any published material derived from the data should acknowledge NCHS as the original source. The suggested citation to appear at the bottom of all tables is as follows: Source: National Center for Health Statistics (1999) When cited in a bibliography, the citation should read: National Center for Health Statistics (1999). Data File Documentation, National Health Interview Survey, (insert YEAR) (machine readable data file and documentation, National Center for Health Statistics, Hyattsville, Maryland. The published material should also include a disclaimer that credits any analyses, interpretations, or conclusions reached to the author (recipient of the data file) and not to NCHS, which is responsible only for the initial data. Consumers who wish to publish a technical description of the data should make an effort to insure that the description is not inconsistent with that published by NCHS. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
