ICD-9/10 MICAR Dictionary


The portion of the Mortality Medical Indexing, Classification, and Retrieval
System (MICAR) dictionary included in the files listed below contains all
diseases, surgeries, procedures, injuries, and poisonings which are valid
to the MICAR system, as of July 22, 1997.  External causes are not included
in this dictionary.

Many surgeries have not been assigned an ICD-10 code.  The code U00 is a
temporary value which will be replaced by an ICD-10 code in the future.

Within the MICAR system, each entity reference number (ERN) represents a
distinct disease.  However, one given ERN may be included several times
depending upon the number of valid abbreviations.  For example:

ERN 000001:	Acute Myocardial Infarction
                A Myocardial Infarction
                AMI
                Acute Myocardial Infarct
                etc.

The entire dictionary currently includes 145,223 lines in ASCII format.  To
ease downloading, the dictionary has been divided into ten parts.  The file,
DICT.ZIP 1,330,294, contains all ten parts.  In addition, the zip files for
each part of the dictionary are as follows:

This zipped ASCII file contains 2 columns of ERN's.  The ERN in the left
column has been deleted from the MICAR system.  The ERN in the right column
should be used instead of the ERN in the left column.

This file must be used by anyone who has translated the dictionary into
another language or using the dictionary in other software.  All references
to an ERN in the left column must be replaced with the ERN in the right
column.
