Information on
health status of the population comes from many sources and includes many types of data.
"How healthy are we?" is a complex question and there are many ways that it can
be answered. Health status can include the presence or absence of physical, mental, or
emotional problems; symptoms; diagnosed acute or chronic illness; role functions;
self-perceptions; technical and legal determinations; and more. Periodically, a different
aspect of health status will be featured on the Social Statistics Briefing Room,
selected from the many health data systems of the National Center for Health Statistics
(NCHS) and other agencies. Many of these statistics have been published in the annual
report Health, United States, a report on the health status of the Nation submitted
by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to the President and the Congress. For more
detailed information on data collection, publications, and public-use data files, go to
the NCHS home page.
