NATIONAL HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY 4/21/2006 PUBLIC USE DATA RELEASE 1992 CORE FILES - VERSION WITHOUT HISPANIC OVERSAMPLE INTRODUCTION The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is conducted annually by the Division of Health Interview Statistics (DHIS), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The NHIS administers face-to-face interviews in a nationally representative sample of households. Each week a probability sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population of the United States is interviewed by personnel of the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Information is obtained about the health and other characteristics of each member of the household. DESCRIPTION OF THIS RELEASE THE MODIFIED FILES IN THIS RELEASE ARE PRIMARILY FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO COMBINE NHIS CORE FILES FOR DATA YEARS 1991 AND 1992. The Division of Health Interview Statistics has re-released modified versions of all of the 1992 NHIS Core files. Records for the oversample of Hispanic persons (those also sampled in 1991) have been deleted from these files and the weights of the remaining sample have been revised accordingly. These are the only changes to these files. These revised files have been reissued primarily for those who need to combine 1991 and 1992 data files for analytic purposes. Supplement Files The following 1992 supplement files, each of which contains one record for each person in the person core file, have not been re-released. To reconstruct these files without the Hispanic oversample, match these files to the modified person core file, deleting those records which do not match, and use the weights from the modified person file: Family Resources Health Insurance The following 1992 supplement files did not exist in 1991. Therefore, the issue of combining 1991 and 1992 is irrelevant and no modified weights are necessary: Cancer Control Cancer Epidemiology Youth Risk Behavior The following 1992 supplement files were originally created with no Hispanic oversample records. Therefore, modified weights are not needed: AIDS Knowledge and Attitudes Immunization FILES IN THIS RELEASE The 1992 modified NHIS "core" records are divided into 5 data files. For ease of transmission, each of the 1992 modified NHIS core data files has been converted into a self-extracting compressed format. For example: Copy the data file HOUSEHNH.EXE into a directory called NHIS1992. To do this, create a directory on your C: drive called NHIS1992. Then, using your browser, go to the FTP site containing the 1992 NHIS data files (see address at end of this section). Right click on the HOUSEHNH.EXE file. Depending on your browser, select Save Link As... or Save Target As... Type c:\nhis1992\HOUSEHNH.EXE in the box labeled File Name and hit Enter. To then extract HOUSEHNH.EXE into the ASCII file HOUSEHNH.DAT, go to the directory NHIS1992 and do the following: - From DOS - in the c:\nhis1992 directory, type HOUSEHNH and hit Enter - From Windows - Double-click on HOUSEHNH.EXE or Click the Start Button, Click Run, enter c:\nhis1992\HOUSEHNH.EXE and hit Enter. The ASCII file HOUSEHNH.DAT will be generated which can then be used for processing by PC statistical software packages which utilize ASCII formatted input, or transferred to another computer for processing. NOTE: The 1992 NHIS files are large in size. Please use caution and check your disk drive capacity before extracting. The 1992 core files that have been modified to remove the records containing the 1992 Hispanic Oversample records may be accessed at: ftp://ftp.cdc.gov/pub/Health_Statistics/NCHS/Datasets/NHIS/1992/ 1992 NHIS DOCUMENTATION FILES The previously released core file documentation may be used for these modified files.
