Due to the size of some data files, some files are in "zip" folders or files which compressed the data file to save space and facilitate downloading. The extension ".zip" in the file name indicates it is a zip file. Once the zip file is downloaded, the user needs to extract the original file from the zip file to use the original uncompressed data file in statistical software packages. Two types of data files are available: (1) SAS data files, and (2) ASCII or text data files. In addition to using SAS software with the SAS data files, many other software packages have the capacity to read and use SAS data files; if a user is using a software other than SAS, it is recommended that the user consult the documentation of the software package being used for information on how to read in SAS data files directly. There are also input statements for SAS, SPSS, and STATA to read the text data files to create system data files within the respective software packages. To use one of the input-statement files, open the file with Wordpad or similar text-file reader. Each input-statement file indicates places where the user's directory location of downloaded files, and that for the system file to be created, need to be inserted. For example, each input statement file indicates the place to insert the directory location of the text data file the user downloaded. Once the input-statement file has been modified with the user's directory locations, save it and then run it in the relevant software package to create the relevant system data file from the text file. It is recommended that a user consult the documentation of the software package being used as needed for additional information on the specific process or commands to run the input-statement file.
