1994 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Imputed Family Resources Public Use Data File Income and Assets (Part D) WARNING - DATA USE RESTRICTIONS! Read Carefully before Using The Public Health Service Act (Section 308 (d)) provides that the data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), may be used only for the purpose of health statistical reporting and analysis. Any effort to determine the identity of any reported case is prohibited by this law. NCHS does all it can to assure that the identity of data subjects cannot be disclosed. All direct identifiers, as well as any characteristics that might lead to identification, are omitted from the data set. By using these data, you signify your agreement to comply with the above-stated statutorily based requirements. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Introduction This file contains edited and imputed data for the Income and Assets portions (part D) of the 1994 National Health Interview Survey, Family Resources question- naire (NHIS-FR). The Family Resources (FR) data file consists of data from the income and assets supplement which collected information on employment, income from employment and businesses, other income sources including retirement and social security, and asset holdings including cars, houses, businesses, and investment properties. Additional information on the receipt of income from public programs including AFDC, SSI, and Food stamps is also included. The 1994 FR differs from other NHIS data in that it includes imputed or "allocated" data (using a hot deck method). Data that have been allocated are identified in flag fields at the end of the file. Description of several important aspects of the file are found in the file documentation. Data users should use great care in reading all preliminary notes and information in the file documentation. Overview of the File Structure The 1994 NHIS-FR public use data file contains 116,179 records with a record length of 594. Each record contains data for one person. The contents of the file are described in detail in the file documentation which includes unweighted frequencies for each variable. In general, the 1994 NHIS-FR file is organized in the following manner: a. The NHIS person record from the core questionnaire (locations 1-200); b. The weight and design fields (locations 201-335); c. Work experience and current earnings (locations 336-411); d. Income from other sources (locations 412-489) including income from public programs such as welfare, SSI, SSDI,and the cash value of food stamps; e. Asset ownership and valuation (locations 490-506); f. Total edited income (locations 521-526 and 527-532); g.
