NHANES II Mortality Study, 1992 The files listed below describe the NHANES II Mortality Study (NH2MS). The data are stored in a ZIP file, H2MS1992.ZIP. Use a ZIP extraction program (such as PkZip) to install this data in a directory (folder) on your harddrive. Installation requires two megabytes of disk space. Once installed, you will find three files in the directory: H2C1992.DAT 1992NH2MS Cause of Death Data, H2M1992.DAT 1992 NH2MS Mortality Status Data, H2MS1992.DOC Documentation for these files. H2MS1992.DOC is a text file. For best viewing in a word processor use a fixed-space font such as Courier. Margins should be set to zero or the smallest allowed value. Using the layout descriptions in H2MS1992.DOC, you can import data into the analysis package of your choice. The complete data layout, record size and number of records for each data file is included in the documentation. The data layout for both data files consists of the file position, field size, and codes for each data element. For example, in the data layout for H2C1992.DAT you will find this line: 55-56 2 Month This indicates that the month number is found in positions 55 and 56, and that it used two positions.
